Wide Angle, 2009 – 2010

About
My role was to coordinate Wide Angle Youth Media’s Who Are You? Youth Media Festival with a committee of high school students. The Who Are You? Youth Media Festival honors Baltimore City youth ages 10 – 19; showcasing their talents in video, photography, poetry, performance, and fine art in a month-long celebration at CENTERSTAGE theatre.

As the Community Art Corps Festival Instructor for Wide Angle Youth Media, I was instrumental in facilitating a class called Youth Media Festival (YMF). YMF consists of 12 high school youth who organize, manage, jury, and plan the Who Are You? Youth Media Festival. My ability to build relationships with youth is very natural and intuitive. I developed a social justice based curriculum that was used to facilitate workshops for YMF during the 6 months prior to the festival. I taught workshops in the community to encourage local youth to submit multimedia entries to the festival. The result of my efforts was made apparent in the entry submission increase of 100 more entries than that of the previous year.

During the Fall semester, the bulk of the classes were centered around art making (i.e. getting into the head of an artist) and what it takes to make a piece of artwork. During the Spring semester, the bulk of the classes were centered on jurying, curating, marketing, and preparing for the festival. The students work on event planning, public speaking networking skills, and organizational activities.
